Red Light Therapy Dosing Chart

The whole point of red light therapy is dose, measured in joules per cm². This printable grid turns your panel's irradiance and your session length straight into J/cm², with target ranges by goal.

The short answer

Dose (J/cm²) = irradiance (mW/cm²) × time in seconds ÷ 1,000. So 60 mW/cm² for 5 minutes equals 18 J/cm². Target windows by goal: skin and hair roughly 3 to 10 J/cm², muscle recovery 10 to 40 J/cm², deep joint pain 20 to 60 J/cm². More is not better, because red light has a biphasic dose response, so aim for the window, not the maximum.

The dosing formula

Every figure on this page comes from one equation:

Dose (J/cm²) = irradiance (mW/cm²) × time (seconds) ÷ 1,000

Irradiance is set by your device and how far you sit from it; time is the lever you control. Find your panel's irradiance (manufacturers should publish it at several distances), pick your goal's target dose below, then read the grid for how long to sit.

All values are J/cm², calculated as irradiance × time × 60 ÷ 1,000. Real-world irradiance falls fast with distance, so use the figure for your actual treatment distance, not the panel's headline "at the surface" number.

Target dose by goal

The literature varies widely and these are general planning ranges, not prescriptions. Note the biphasic dose response: there is an optimal window, and overshooting tends to flatten the benefit rather than add to it.

Distance matters as much as time

Irradiance drops steeply as you move away from a panel, so the same five-minute session delivers far fewer joules at 18 inches than at 6. If your device only publishes irradiance "at the surface," assume real-use irradiance is lower and lean toward the figures in the upper rows of the grid. When in doubt, measure your distance and keep it consistent session to session.
