How Does a Sauna Work?

A sauna works by raising your core temperature, which forces your body into a cooling response — more blood flow to the skin, a faster heart rate, and sweating. Here's the physics and the physiology, plainly.

A sauna works by raising your core body temperature. Traditional saunas heat the air to 150–195F; infrared saunas warm your body directly at 120–140F. In response, blood vessels widen, heart rate climbs to 100–150 bpm like light exercise, and you sweat to cool down. That repeated heat stress drives the benefits.

The short version: heat in, cooling response out

A sauna works by deliberately overheating you a little. It raises your core temperature by a degree or two, and your body reacts the way it would to a warm day or light exercise — it tries to shed that heat. That cooling response is the whole point: it widens your blood vessels, speeds up your heart, and turns on your sweat glands. Do it regularly and your cardiovascular system adapts, which is where the association with better heart health comes from (Laukkanen 2015, sources).

Two ways to deliver the heat: convection vs infrared

There are two main types of sauna, and they get heat into you differently.

  • Traditional (convection + radiant): An electric or wood stove heats rocks, which heat the air to roughly 150–195°F. That hot air and the radiant heat from the stones warm your skin. Pour water on the rocks and you add steam, which raises the perceived heat and intensity.
  • Infrared: Panels emit infrared light that your body absorbs directly, warming you rather than the air around you. Because it heats you directly, the air stays cooler — usually 120–140°F — which many people find easier to sit in for longer.

What happens to your heart

As you heat up, blood vessels near the skin dilate so warm blood can reach the surface and lose heat. To keep up, your heart beats faster — commonly 100–150 beats per minute, which overlaps with light-to-moderate exercise. Your cardiac output can rise meaningfully during a session. This is why a sauna feels mildly demanding and why the cardiovascular load matters: the Finnish cohort data links frequent use to lower cardiovascular mortality. Why you sweat: thermoregulation

Sweating is your primary cooling system. As sweat evaporates off your skin, it carries heat away. In a hot sauna you can lose a pint or more of fluid in a session — almost entirely water and electrolytes. That's why the scale drops afterward and why rehydration matters: the weight comes right back when you drink. Sweat is not a detox channel; your liver and kidneys do that work. How often, how hot, how long

The best-evidenced pattern from the research is roughly 19 minutes at ~174°F, 4–7 times a week (Laukkanen 2015) — but that's the high end, and two to three sessions still beats one.
