Partly. Buijze 2016 found people ending showers cold took about 29% fewer sick days, but they were not sick less often — just for shorter stretches, and they self-reported. It is real, encouraging evidence that cold may help you feel functional sooner, not proof that cold plunging supercharges your immune system.

The headline evidence: Buijze 2016

The strongest data linking cold exposure to immune-related outcomes is Buijze et al. 2016 (sources), a large randomized controlled trial in the Netherlands. Participants who ended their daily shower with 30–90 seconds of cold water reported about 29% fewer sick days off work over the study period than the control group. That is a real, sizable, randomized result — the kind of evidence cold therapy rarely has. Now the limits, honestly

The 29% figure is real, but it does not say everything the internet claims it does:

  • It measured sick days, not infections. The cold group reported fewer sick days — but did not actually get sick measurably less often. They may simply have felt able to work through mild illness. That is still useful, but it is not "cold stops you getting sick."
  • It studied cold showers, not plunges. The protocol was a brief cold finish to a warm shower — not full ice-bath immersion. There is no evidence that a colder, more intense plunge does this better.
  • Self-reported, single trial. One well-run study is a strong start, not a settled science. Association is not causation, and this is one data point.

So the honest framing: cold exposure may reduce illness-related downtime, the effect is modest, and the cheapest version — a cold-shower finish — is the one that was actually tested.
